In this lesson students will design, carve and print a simplified animal relief stamp using soft-cut carving blocks, then layer colour and complementary elements to compose a finished mixed-media print that responds to the simplified line work of Ghost Patrol and the cultural storytelling of Alick Tipoti’s linocut practice.

Learning outcomes:

• I can simplify an animal form into a bold, two-dimensional line drawing suitable for carving.
• I can safely carve a relief stamp from a soft-cut block using V- and U-gouge tools.
• I can print my stamp using ink and layered colour to create a considered composition.
• I can combine multiple stamped elements and a hand-painted background to create a finished artwork.
• I can explain how simplification and repetition change the way an image is read.
