In this lesson students will explore the historical and cultural significance of animal masks and the concept of anthropomorphism. Students will discuss and explore the conventions of mask making and how totem and spirit animals are incorporated into art across different cultures and periods.

Students will learn and practice hand-building, sculpting, painting and glazing techniques with air-dry clay or clay. Students will experiment with these techniques to create a three-dimensional mask in clay to explore how personal qualities, feelings and character traits can be represented via animals.
The students will explore the following principles and elements of art, form, shape and texture.

Learning outcomes:

I can demonstrate my understanding of hand-building techniques using clay or air-dry clay
I can demonstrate my understanding of the cultural significance of animal masks
I can demonstrate my understanding of the conventions of mask making
I can use a variety of modelling techniques to create my mask
I can explore my own personal characteristics, feelings and qualities and investigate and identify animals with similar characteristics.
I can reflect on my artwork and explain the choices I made in terms of texture, shape and form.
I can present my mask to others, explaining the inspiration behind it and the artistic techniques used-
