In this lesson, students will create an illustration of an endangered Australian animal influenced by the themes and expressive representational style of Karlee Rawkins.

Students will address the conservation efforts of Australian animals at risk of extinction, conducting their own research of an animal of their choice.

In response to this study, students will use images of the animal’s habitat, physical and behavioural characteristics to create a series of decorative papers made with a variety of techniques such as sgraffito, wax resist and non-representational depictions of features such as colours of their environment. Students will use these papers to create a layered paper cut out collage interpretation of the animal. Students will draw with scissors, a technique employed by Henri Matisse and illustrative paper artists.

Learning outcomes:

Research an endangered Australian species autonomously.
Recognise themes and stylistic elements of Karlee Rawkins practice.
Use reference imagery of their researched species to construct a variety of decorative papers.
Draw connections between concepts developed from reference imagery and their chosen animal.
Use drawing with scissor processes.
Consider composition in the development of an illustrative collage.
