In this lesson students will explore colour, shape, texture and form to create a small insect feeder, in the form of a dish, inspired by the Australian artist Bridget Bodenham. Students will view and discuss the ceramic works of Bridget Bodenham. Students will experiment with air drying clay to create their own small dish which will become an ‘insect feeder’ to place amongst the flowers and gardens at school.

Throughout the making process, they will explore and use modelling techniques including pinching, rolling, flattening, pushing, breaking and twisting. Students will also add texture to their dish using leaves, petals, seeds and other items found in nature and their art room to imprint into their clay.
They will apply paint to their feeder and will consider which colours attract insects. Students will make their insect feeder waterproof by applying a sealer, such as Zart’s podge.
