In this lesson, students will produce a mixed media work of an Australian plant, influenced by themes and processes of Karlee Rawkins.
Students will participate in a series of tasks where they will incorporate multiple materials and mark making techniques onto a paper surface such as; Painting with a palette knife or squeegee, applying collage, and continuous line drawing with ink.
Students will paint an outline and negative space around their chosen botanic, using unpainted areas to act as their subject. By constructing their work in layers of various materials, students will recognise processes employed by Rawkins and understand how a work can transform in the making process.
Older students will research endangered plants within Australia to use as reference imagery, investigating their circumstances of extinction and associations within First Nations histories and cultures.
It is recommended that this lesson is modified depending on student ages and needs. Please see the teacher notes for more information.
