In this lesson, students will construct a library bag, decorated with a self-portrait made from recycled fabrics, in response to the practice of Julia Gutman.

Exploring a cross curricular numeracy focus, students will investigate the mathematical proportions of the face. They will practise portraiture drawing skills including recognising facial feature placement, measurement, utilising a grid system and assessing shapes.
Students will replicate self-portrait drawings as fabric collages in the style of Gutman, dissecting tones and colours of textiles to construct a self-portrait.
The portrait in this resource has been adhered to a library bag however can be adapted to other textile types such as a banner or canvas to meet the interests of learning groups.
Students will develop metalanguage in both Visual Arts and Maths in producing these works.

Learning outcomes:

Practise sketching facial features.
Implement the proportions of the face when constructing a portrait.
Understand numeracy and arts metalanguage including: parallel, broken lines, grid, proportion, composition etc
Colour match appropriate fabrics with a photograph.
Make and use a template.
Replicate a planned composition.
Use collage materials with precision including scissors, glue, and drawing.
Experiment with various fabrics, patterns, and textures to produce a mixed media self-portrait.
