In this lesson students will explore their personal connections to the text ‘Eric’ by Shaun Tan and to the artworks of First Nations artist Judy Watson to develop their creative response.

Students will explore their personal connections to the text ‘Eric’ written and illustrated by Shaun Tan. They will also analyse and discuss the artworks of First Nations artist Judy Watson as her process and artwork highlight her connection to land and culture, similar to the cultural connections throughout ‘Eric.’ These explorations will inform the student’s creative responses.

To create their response, students will research, sketch and annotate flora/plants/objects that are connected to their own cultural background. They will construct their own cultural garden using air-dry clay and paint. Students will consider the art elements of scale, form and colour.
